NESTA – the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts – made its first awards for creativity and innovation in May 2000. The awardees were supplied with video equipment and asked to document their projects as they developed. We focussed on the journeys of the individuals who received support through video diaries, their thoughts and testamonials – the

suitcase which contained the video equipment becomes a metaphor for travel, change and escape. It appears in juxtaposed environments throughout the report, as do on-screen images and ‘hidden’ doorways, allowing the reader to make their own connections and journey through the book.
